Languages allow learning to travel beyond borders and open understanding of other cultures.

Learning a foreign language is a liberation from insularity and provides an opening to other cultures. A high-quality languages education should foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. The teaching should enable pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing. It should also provide opportunities for them to communicate for practical purposes, learn new ways of thinking and read great literature in the original language. At Key Stage 3, our Modern Foreign Languages curriculum brings language learning to life by pairing the teaching of core linguistic knowledge with a strong focus on cultural understanding. Students explore the cultures of the countries where the language is spoken through film, music, celebrations, traditions, geography and contemporary life, helping them to understand how language connects to people and cultures. Alongside this, we ensure that all students develop a secure foundation in vocabulary, grammar and phonics in French or Spanish, enabling accurate pronunciation and confident communication. Students regularly practise listening, speaking, reading and writing, with lessons typically incorporating all four skills. This carefully sequenced approach ensures that students are well-prepared to develop a deeper and more nuanced understanding of language at Key Stage 4. Our enthusiastic teachers create a positive and supportive learning environment, encouraging students to enjoy language learning and to flourish.

Homework

Students in Key Stage 3 will be set a range of independent learning tasks via Educake each fortnight. Tasks will include listening, reading, writing, vocabulary practice and grammar practice, and topics will mirror those covered in lessons to ensure students have every opportunity to consolidate their learning. 

Students in Key Stage 4 will access most of their homework tasks via Educake each week. On occasion, class teachers may set alternative tasks where, for example, specific learning or consolidation is required in preparation for an exam or assessment.

Extracurricular

Key Stage 3 students are invited to attend MFL Club each week, where they will have the opportunity to expand their interest in learning languages and the cultures they stem from. Students will participate in a wide range of activities, ranging from arts and crafts, to film projects.

Students in Key Stage 4 are invited to attend Revision Masterclasses each week with their class teacher. These sessions will allow students to practice the skills and language they learn in lessons, including additional grammar practice, as well as the chance to focus on key exam skills.
