    Art, craft and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity. A high-quality art and design education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. They should also know how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation. Adapted from National Curriculum, DfE, 2014.

    We want students to develop a deep understanding and appreciation of art as a powerful tool to communicate, manipulate and inspire. Students will learn how art is central to civilisation, how it has shaped our history, holds a mirror to the present and projects our future.

    It is important that each student gets to experience the benefits that art can have on their physical, mental, spiritual, and emotional health. We value how art can significantly develop confidence, a unique voice, and a sense of identity at a key developmental stage in students' lives.

    We aim to give students the skills required to solve a wide range of problems with creative solutions. Employers value creative thinkers who are able to adapt and evolve. Our curriculum and our pedagogy is designed to develop students who are able to handle mistakes, accept criticism and show the resilience to explore and experiment until solutions are formulated.

    Key Stage 3 – Students will be set extended learning tasks that explore art history and encourage students to develop their analytical and writing skills. The selected artworks that students will be asked to respond to will link to their classwork and build on the knowledge developed through the curriculum.

    Key Stage 4 – The requirement to work outside of lessons at GCSE level of study is paramount to success. Students are expected to work at home and encouraged to attend weekly support sessions to maximise their potential. Students with guidance should always be looking for opportunities to develop portfolio work and develop their skills, knowledge and understanding.

    Extracurricular

    Key Stage 4 (Year 10 and 11)

    Students are currently supported with weekly lunchtime support sessions throughout the course. In addition, students will have the opportunity to attend extended after-school sessions as appropriate.
