The four campaigners – Rosie, Ruby, Summer and Roz – are taking part in the Humberside Police Lifestyle Challenge under the name the Sibling Squad, as they are two pairs of sisters. They are calling for urgent action to improve road safety at the zebra crossing on the A1033 near the Thorngumbald Community Institute, which is located between two busy bus stops. The issue has gained renewed attention following an incident in January 2024 when 11-year-old Alexa Wrightson was hit by a car while walking home from school. Alexa was using the zebra crossing, which residents and campaigners claim is routinely ignored by drivers. Although Alexa was not seriously hurt, she described it as a “scary” experience and said she did not want others to go through the same thing.

This summer, Maddie, Bethany, Daisy, Ivy, Svea, Elsie and Tahlia – calling themselves the Burstwick Besties – have been taking part in the Humberside Police Lifestyle project, setting themselves a challenge to raise money for a good cause while providing entertainment for local children. The girls chose to support local charity Go Kids Go, after the organisation visited their school in June to deliver a disability awareness workshop. The session gave pupils an insight into the daily challenges faced by young wheelchair users. Since 1990, Go Kids Go has provided vital wheelchair skills training, helping children and young people build independence and confidence in their everyday lives.

Inspectors noted the high expectations staff have for students and the well-designed, ambitious curriculum which helps them develop knowledge and skills for future success. Students with SEND access the same ambitious curriculum as their peers. Teachers have strong subject knowledge and explain learning clearly. Inspectors highlighted the welcoming and inclusive nature of the school, where students understand the school’s ARRK values (aspirational, resilient, respectful and kind) which are embedded in the life of school. They also praised behaviour in school, where students demonstrate tolerance and kindness and treat others with respect. 

Headteacher Neal Holder said:  

"We are delighted that the report by Ofsted highlights the progress the school has made and the positive signs of impact. It comments on the high expectations staff have and the positive difference school leaders, governors and the wider trust are making. We are grateful for the valuable support we receive from our parents and the wider community as we continue our journey of improvement at Holderness Academy.''
