Beyond the classroom
Extra curricular activities take place at lunchtime, at the end of the day, and on Saturday mornings. There are two late buses, which run on Tuesdays and Thursdays, to take students to their usual dropping off point. Sporting activities are very strong and the college is fortunate to have a heated indoor swimming pool and sports centre as well as gymnasium facilities and extensive playing fields.
Sports include soccer, rugby, hockey, netball, basketball, volleyball, athletics, trampolining, gymnastics, and modern dance. There are inter-school competitions in many of these activities.
As well as fielding strong teams, individual students have been chosen to represent the East Riding, some have represented the UK at their particular sport. There are regular opportunities for students to go abroad on visits of a cultural or recreational nature.
Communication with parents is through this website and through e-mailing our messages using ParentMailTM and e-newsletters. Paper copies are provided where an e-mail address is not available.
The Student Voice
Increasingly we involve students views in our evaluation of aspects of college life including teaching and learning. Through the Year Councils, College Council and surveys, we listen and respond to the views of students.
Additional Educational Needs
Our special needs provision for students with or without statements is well resourced by a trained Learning Support team of staff under the guidance of our Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator.
Students on the special needs register are carefully monitored so that the teaching and learning process can be tailored to suit the needs of the individual.
Gifted and Talented Students
A register is kept of Gifted and/or Talented students. Teachers are aware, through the data they receive, of this register and personalise the teaching accordingly.
A Gifted student is identified by test results and parents are informed when a student meets the criteria set nationally.
Talented students are nominated by Art, Drama, Music and Physical Education teachers when they show excellent achievement in these subject areas. We aim to do all we can to encourage and nurture our Gifted and Talented students both inside the classroom and through extra curricular events.
We have an increasing number of students who also meet the criteria for enrolment to The Young Gifted and Talented Programme and we have a designated Assistant Headteacher and also a Lead Teacher who keep in touch with parents.
Statistics
Statistics showing rates of authorised and unauthorised absence, public examination results and student destinations are published and are issued at the College Open Evening.
College Uniform
The uniform consists of a black polo shirt with college logo and a black sweatshirt with college logo. These items are purchased from the college.
Items of PE kit with the college logo are also purchased from the college. Details of the full uniform and the uniform code are supplied to all students prior to admission, through the Student Planner and on this website.
Forward Looking - a Technology College with the Rural Dimension
Our TC specialist subjects are Mathematics, Science, Design Technology and ICT. We are committed to raising achievement, not only in our specialist subjects, but in all subjects.
We have 14 networked computer rooms containing over 500 computers with Broadband connectivity to enable the use of computers to be integrated into the teaching and learning of all subjects. A WiFi network covers most of the college site. All students take a GCSE ICT course.
We offer courses for the wider community and work in partnership with our linked schools providing teaching and technical support. All students use computer aided design and manufacture (CAD-CAM) in their Design Technology lessons. Sustainability is a key theme in Design Technology.
Vocational courses (BTEC and OCR for example) are well established in Key stage 4 and we plan to greater personalise the routes available.
We are developing the use of this website as a resource for learning and students can use it to access our Virtual Learning Environment.
We use industry standard software and applications wherever possible and use the latest technology to communicate with parents.
The Curriculum
In Key Stage 3 all students follow courses in Art, Design Technology, English, Humanities (Geography, History and RE), ICT, Mathematics, a Modern Foreign Language, Music, Personal and Social Education (including Citizenship), Physical Education and Science.
In Key Stage 4 there is a common curriculum and a number of choices within our 14-19 routes. The common curriculum consists of Design Technology, English (Language and Literature), ICT, Mathematics, RE, Personal and Social Education (including Citizenship), Physical Education and Science.
An increasing number of subjects and qualifications are offered within our 14-19 Routes including GCSE, OCR and BTEC courses.
Students are usually grouped according to their ability and entry for examinations is made when students have shown that they are ready to be entered, rather than that they have reached a certain age.
Partnership with home
For the students, we aim to provide challenging teaching and learning opportunities through a curriculum that is broad, balanced, progressive, continuous and relevant. It caters equally for age, ability and individual needs, promotes spiritual, moral, social, cultural, mental and physical development.
We value heads, hands and hearts equally and have the highest expectations of attainment and conduct, ensuring that every student experiences success, challenge, responsibility, reward and recognition. We celebrate, record and publicise achievements of all types and promote the use of technology where it assists teaching and learning.
For parents, we aim to encourage full involvement in the life of the school and provide a range of information so as to encourage improved understanding and closer liaison between home and college. Further information is contained in our Parent Connect policy.
Routines
The College Day
The college day of five hours of taught lessons is divided into five periods of 60 minutes each, three in the morning and two in the afternoon. This is more than the recommended minimum.
Each day begins at 8.35 with a 20 minute period used for assemblies, study, recreation and personal and social development. The lunch break is 50 minutes long and the last lesson ends at 15.20. Buses depart at 15.30. Over 1000 pupils are transported to SHTC on 18 contracted buses. The college offers an extra curricular activities programme on Tuesday and Thursday evenings with late transport departing at 16.45. More information is provided by our extended schools co-ordinator.
Assemblies
Assemblies are designed to give students a sense of belonging to a large community, as well as being an opportunity for thought and reflection. Parents have the right to withdraw their children from assemblies, although we would not recommend this.
South Holderness Technology College has no affiliation with a religious denomination. To fulfil the legal requirement, all students follow a course in Religious Education according to a locally agreed syllabus and in Key Stage 4, this leads to a GCSE qualification.
Choosing South Holderness
Admissions policy
We are pleased that so many Year 6 pupils wish to join us from their primary schools. However, as a result South Holderness Technology College is over-subscribed. This means that all admissions to the school are dealt with by the East Riding of Yorkshire Council Local Authoritys School Admissions Department.
The Admissions Process
The Local Authority issue Preference Forms for Year 6 pupils attending the primary schools within the East Riding area. Parents are required to complete the form and send it back to the primary school, showing clearly the choice of secondary school.
Once all the forms have been collected the places are then allocated. Of course there are rules to be applied! Those families living within what used to be the "catchment area" are given places first, and then other criteria are applied until all places are full. The colleges admission limit currently stands at 330 per year, although should there be places left once the criteria have been applied then the Local Authority will consider other applications, again based on set criteria.
There is an appeals procedure.
If an older student wishes to join the college then applications must also be made through the Local Authority.
